Metron is one of the most established EMS platforms in Europe: a SaaS platform that uses artificial intelligence to optimise energy-intensive industrial processes, with its Italian headquarters in Milan.
However, it was designed for industrial plants. Those evaluating it for a portfolio of buildings, or looking for a supplier that also provides sensors, have alternatives better suited to their context. This guide compares them.
For transparency: UTwin, one of the alternatives listed below, is our software. We are stating this upfront and, as with every platform in this comparison, we also explain the contexts in which it is not the right choice.
According to its official documentation, Metron is an energy management and optimisation platform (the parent company calls it EMOS, Energy Management and Optimization System) with the following characteristics:
For an industrial group with energy-intensive processes and a dedicated energy team, Metron is one of the leading solutions in its category. Needs that differ from this profile are why alternatives exist.
The reasons for comparing Metron with other platforms almost always relate to the context, rather than product quality:
The four most relevant alternatives, selected to cover different contexts; each software name links to our dedicated in-depth guide.
| Software | Strengths | Hardware included | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| UTwin | Building digital twin with monitoring of energy, water, gas and environmental conditions, remote AI control and native CMMS, all in the cloud | Yes: smart meters and sensors supplied | Buildings and multi-site portfolios: retail, hotels, residential care facilities and offices |
| Energy Team(CIoE) | Monitoring with in-house meters plus services: audits, ISO 50001, demand response and incentives | Yes: own meters | Italian industry with regulatory compliance requirements |
| Sensorfact | Plug-and-play wireless sensors plus subscription software: machine-level energy, gas, compressed air and water | Yes: wireless sensors | Manufacturing SMEs that want to get started within days |
| Advizo | SaaS EMS for real estate portfolios with dedicated energy management services; office in Milan | Through dedicated IoT services | Manufacturing SMEs that want to get started within days |
UTwin is our platform and addresses the opposite context to the one Metron was designed for: buildings. It creates a digital twin from BIM models or CAD floor plans and overlays operational energy data: monitoring energy, water, gas and environmental parameters with smart meters and sensors supplied directly.
AI then remotely adjusts building systems according to outdoor weather and the actual occupancy of spaces, while the native CMMS turns anomalies into work orders.
For retail, smaller corporate offices, hotels, residential care facilities and supermarkets, it provides building-system control with an investment up to 70% lower than a traditional BMS. In industrial plants, it covers the building and general utilities; for AI optimisation of process recipes, platforms such as Metron remain the better fit.
Energy Team is Italy's long-established specialist in energy monitoring. Its cloud platform CloE, in-house meters and services cover energy audits, ISO 50001, demand response and incentive applications. It is a natural alternative to Metron for Italian industry when a project is driven more by measurement and compliance requirements than by algorithmic process optimisation.
Sensorfact is the quickest alternative for a manufacturing SME: plug-and-play wireless sensors for electrical panels and machines, subscription software and energy-saving recommendations, with monitoring of energy at individual-machine level, gas, compressed air and water.
The company reports more than 4,000 customers in Europe and an active presence in Italy. Where Metron delivers an enterprise project, Sensorfact can get started in days; the trade-off is a simpler scope, without process optimisation.
Founded in 2015 within the engineering group setec and now part of Hager Group, Advizeo has offices in Paris, Berlin and Milan. It is a SaaS EMS for real estate portfolios: it aggregates data from suppliers, meters, sensors and BMSs, reports more than 200,000 measurement points, and complements its platform with dedicated energy management services.
It is the most direct comparison with Metron when the scope shifts from industry to real estate; its model remains focused more on monitoring and advisory services than on implementation.
The approach we have seen work in projects is to start with the consumption map, not a comparison of brands: how much of the bill comes from production processes, and how much from buildings and general utilities. From there:
For a complete overview of the category, see our guide to energy management software and the guide to EMS platforms.
The platform was designed for energy-intensive industrial processes, with some use cases in retail as well. For a portfolio of commercial and service-sector buildings, where savings come from HVAC and lighting systems, the comparison should be with platforms designed for facility management.
The official documentation does not indicate that Metron provides its own measurement hardware: the platform integrates with existing instruments and systems. If sub-metering still needs to be installed, the cost and coordination of sensors should be included in the financial comparison.
It depends on the model: Metron describes an implementation process of around three months, typical of enterprise platforms. Solutions using plug-and-play wireless sensors and designed for buildings and SMEs can deliver the first data within days; a fair comparison always requires the same measurement scope.
These platforms serve different contexts. For buildings and commercial property portfolios requiring multi-utility monitoring, remote automation and integrated maintenance, UTwin is designed for that use case. For AI optimisation of an industrial group's production processes, Metron remains a leading option.
Three things: an inventory of what is already measured (meters, sub-metering and protocols), a breakdown of consumption between processes and buildings, and a decision about who will use the platform every week. With these answers, demos can be compared on an equal basis.
Before comparing platforms, map your consumption: where the energy goes, how much is used by processes and how much by buildings, and what is already measured. That map will show whether your project needs an industrial EMS such as Metron or a platform designed for buildings, turning the decision from a question of brands into a question of context.
