Alternatives to Energy Team: energy monitoring platforms for businesses and buildings

img not found

Energy Team is Italy's long-established provider of energy monitoring: its CloE cloud platform, in-house meters, and a package of services ranging from energy audits to demand response. It is a reference point for industry, but it is not the right solution for every context: organizations managing tertiary-sector buildings or seeking automation beyond data collection have concrete alternatives. This guide compares them.

A transparency note: UTwin, one of the alternatives listed below, is our software. We disclose this upfront and, as with every platform in this comparison, also identify the situations in which it is not the right choice.

In brief:

  • Energy Team focuses on measurement and compliance: in-house meters, the CloE platform, and energy services.
  • It was designed for industry and for organizations that need to manage regulatory obligations through a single supplier.
  • CloE measures, analyzes, and raises alerts; your team remains responsible for taking action on building systems.
  • If consumption comes from buildings rather than production processes, the comparison should shift to platforms designed for facility management.

What Energy Team does (and what it does well)

Energy Team has operated in energy monitoring, control, and consumption management for almost thirty years, with more than 7,000 customers and, according to company data, over 9% of Italy's national electricity consumption under monitoring. It has been part of the Nadara Group since 2018. According to its official documentation, its offering consists of three elements:

  • The CloE cloud platform, with Efficiency (consumption analysis), Sentinel (real-time monitoring), and EMS modules. Reported figures include 160,000 measurements across 36,000 devices at 8,700 sites, with reports, alerts, inefficiency heatmaps, and correlations with non-energy data.
  • In-house metering hardware: meters and sensors designed and supplied by Energy Team, an uncommon feature in the Italian market.
  • In-house metering hardware: meters and sensors designed and supplied by Energy Team, an uncommon feature in the Italian market.

Its real strength lies in measurement oversight and compliance: for an industrial site with regulatory obligations to manage, having one supplier for certified instruments, the platform, and compliance procedures is a tangible advantage.

When it makes sense to consider an alternative

The situations that prompt organizations to consider other platforms rarely stem from shortcomings in Energy Team. They relate to the scope for which its offering was designed. The most common scenarios are:

  • Your consumption is in buildings, not production processes. For a portfolio of shops, offices, hotels, or care homes, automation, multi-site simplicity, and maintenance integration matter more than industrial precision measurement.
  • You need action, not just monitoring. CloE measures, analyzes, and raises alerts. If your goal also includes remotely adjusting building systems according to weather and occupancy, you need platforms that close the loop between data and action.
  • You are an SME that wants to get started in days, not months. A structured project with dedicated meters makes sense above a certain scale; below that, lighter plug-and-play options are available.
  • You are looking for AI-based optimization of production processes. If savings depend on production recipes (furnaces, production lines, and plant utilities), broaden the comparison to industrial EMS platforms with artificial intelligence.

Comparing alternatives to Energy Team

The four most relevant alternatives, selected to cover different contexts; each software name links to our dedicated in-depth article.

Software Strengths Hardware included When to choose it
UTwin Monitoring of energy, water, gas, and environmental conditions, plus control actions: AI that adjusts building systems remotely, integrated CMMS and digital twin, all in the cloud Yes: smart meters and supplied sensors Buildings and multi-site portfolios: retail, hotels, care homes, offices
Sensorfact Plug-and-play wireless sensors plus subscription software: machine-level energy monitoring, gas, compressed air, and water Yes: wireless sensors Manufacturing SMEs that want to get started within days
Metron SaaS EMS with AI for optimizing energy-intensive processes; Italian office in Milan No Process industries (cement, steel, paper, food)
Zucchetti ZEnergy Multi-utility monitoring and bill analysis, integrated with the Zucchetti management software suite Yes: sensors and data collection units Multi-site companies already using the Zucchetti ecosystem

UTwin

UTwin is our platform and covers the complementary area to Energy Team: buildings. It monitors energy, water, gas, and environmental parameters using smart meters and sensors supplied directly.
It also offers capabilities missing from traditional monitoring: integrated AI adjusts building systems remotely according to outdoor weather and actual space occupancy, while the native CMMS within the digital twin turns anomalies into work orders.
For retail, small offices, hotels, care homes, and supermarkets, it provides building-system control with an investment up to 70% lower than a traditional BMS. However, it does not compete in Energy Team's strongest areas: industrial-scale certified measurement, demand response, and compliance procedures.

Sensorfact

Sensorfact is a lightweight alternative for small and medium-sized manufacturing businesses: plug-and-play wireless sensors for electrical panels and machinery, subscription-based software, and energy-saving recommendations. It covers energy consumption at individual-machine level, gas, compressed air, and water.
The company reports more than 4,000 customers across Europe and an active presence in Italy. The trade-off for this simplicity is its scope: no fiscal or certified metering and no package of regulatory-compliance services.

Metron

Metron is a French SaaS EMS with an Italian office in Milan, designed to optimize energy-intensive processes using artificial intelligence. Its reported figures include more than 200 customers across over 22,000 sites, with use cases in sectors such as cement, steel, paper, and food and beverage.
It is a natural alternative to compare with Energy Team when the goal shifts from monitoring consumption to optimizing production recipes; it does not supply its own metering hardware.

Zucchetti ZEnergy

ZEnergy is Zucchetti's energy management solution: multi-utility monitoring (electricity, thermal energy, gas, water, and air) using sensors and data collection units, automatic bill analysis, and native integration with the group's management software suite, starting with ZMaintenance. It is a suitable alternative for multi-site companies already operating within the Zucchetti ecosystem. We have covered it in detail in our article on alternatives to ZEnergy.

How to choose

The approach that works in our projects is to separate two questions that are often confused: where consumption occurs (in buildings or production processes) and what should happen after measurement (a report or an action affecting building systems). From there:

  • Do you have regulatory obligations to manage? Energy audits under Legislative Decree 102/2014, ISO 50001, and interruptibility requirements: if so, a provider such as Energy Team with dedicated services is a genuine advantage.
  • Who acts on alerts? If every alert requires manual intervention by the facility team, consider the value of a platform that adjusts building systems automatically.
  • What is the scale of the project? Dedicated meters and a structured project above a certain threshold; wireless sensors and rapid deployment below it.
  • One supplier or two? Getting hardware and software from the same supplier reduces lead times and clarifies responsibilities, whichever solution you choose.

Frequently asked questions

  • Does Energy Team only provide monitoring?

No, and this is one of its strengths: in addition to the CloE platform and its own meters, it offers energy audits, ISO 50001 support, demand response, and incentive-related procedures. Anyone looking only for software should compare offers while taking this broader scope into account.

  • Can I reuse existing meters with another platform?

Often, yes, if the devices support open protocols (Modbus, M-Bus) or data exports. This must be checked case by case with the new provider. It is one of the first questions to ask during a demo because it can significantly affect migration costs.

  • What is the difference between industrial monitoring and building monitoring?

The priorities differ: in industry, measurement accuracy, correlation with production, and regulatory compliance matter most; in buildings, multi-site coverage, building-system automation, and links to maintenance are more important. Platforms designed for one environment rarely excel in the other.

  • Does UTwin replace Energy Team?

It depends on the context. For buildings and tertiary-sector property portfolios that require multi-utility monitoring, remote automation, and integrated maintenance, yes: this is UTwin's area of focus. For industrial sites requiring certified measurement, demand response, and regulatory procedures, Energy Team remains a reference point.

  • How much does it cost to change monitoring platforms?

The costs include the software subscription, any new instrumentation, and the time needed to migrate historical data. Before deciding, ask the outgoing provider for a complete data export and the incoming provider for its import procedure. Historical data makes it possible to compare years and measure savings.

Where to start

Before comparing platforms, clarify three things: where consumption occurs, what should happen after measurement, and which regulatory obligations you need to meet. Once these are clear, choosing between Energy Team and its alternatives usually comes down to the context: industry requiring compliance oversight on one side, and buildings requiring automation on the other.
